How to Perform Umrah
The process of performing Umrah begins with making your intention and assuming Ihram. This is followed by entering the Masjid al-Haram and performing Tawaf. After this, you perform two Rak’ah at the Maqam Ibrahim and drink Zamzam water. Next, you undertake Sa’i, walking or running between Safa and Marwa for seven circuits. The final step involves men shaving their heads and women cutting a small portion of their hair to exit the state of Ihram.
Detailed Steps of Umrah:
- Assuming Ihram and Making Niyyah
- Perform Ghusl and cleanse yourself by clipping nails and removing excess body hair before leaving home.
- Men should change into Ihram, wearing two white sheets, while women wear their normal dress without gloves or face coverings.
- Pray Salah al-Ihram, perform two Rak’ahs, and make the intention for Umrah before crossing the Miqat. For those traveling from the UK, this point is 20-30 minutes before landing.
- Recite the Talbiyah from this point onwards, loudly for men and softly for women.

- After Tawaf
- Proceed to Maqam Ibrahim, recite the verse, and perform two Rak’ahs.
- Drink Zamzam water and make an intention for your supplication.
- Perform Istilam if possible and then move to the next stage, Sa’i.
- Performing Sa’i
- Walk to Safa and recite the relevant verses.
- Perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwa, completing seven circuits in total.
- Men should run between the green lights, while women walk.
- Complete Sa’i and move to the final step of cutting hair.
- Shaving/Cutting Hair
- Men shave their heads, and women cut a small portion of their hair to exit the state of Ihram.
- Your Umrah is now complete. Mubarak!
